Dr. Ellis A. Tinsley, Jr. is a leading Wilmington

surgical specialist. Board-certified as both
a general surgeon and a vascular surgeon,
he has over 17 years of experience treating surgical
diseases. In addition to his surgical skills, breadth of
procedures and commitment to quality outcomes,
he is known for his efforts to advocate for improved
patient experience.
Dr. Tinsley received his undergraduate degree
from Davidson College and his Medical Doctorate
or MD degree from the University of North Carolina
School of Medicine. He completed his residency in
general surgery at UNC Hospitals and was promoted
to administrative chief resident. He completed a
fellowship in vascular surgery at UNC Hospitals in
Chapel Hill.
Currently, Dr. Tinsley serves as president of
Wilmington Surgical Associates, PA and as Clinical
Professor of Surgery at University of North Carolina
School of Medicine. He is also Past President of
the North Carolina Chapter, American College of
Surgeons.
As a Wilmington area expert in surgery, Dr. Tinsley
has received numerous professional honors, includ-ing
being named to the list of Best Doctors in North
Carolina yearly since 2001 and to the Leadership
College, North Carolina Medical Society. He has been
a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons since
1996. Previously, he served on numerous task forces
and committees at New Hanover Regional Medical
Center. He has held positions on the boards of the
New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation,
Wilmington Surgcare and Atlantic Surgicenter.
Dr. Tinsley took part in relief mission trips to
Biloxi, Mississippi, New Orleans, Louisiana, and a
medical mission trip to the Dominican Republic in
2008, during which he conducted 35 procedures.
He is President of the Cape Fear Council of the Boy
Scouts of America and an Elder at Saint Andrews-
Covenant Presbyterian Church.
Dr. Tinsley humbly attributes his success to a deep
