Pathology
A pathologist is a highly trained medical specialist who can diagnose
disease through the analysis of tissues and cells ubder a microscope.
He or she is also the part of your medical team you’ll probably
never meet — evaluation takes place in the pathologist’s lab, and the find-ings

are reported to your doctor.
Regardless of the minimal face time,
the pathologist plays a very important
role in a patient’s medical care. “We
can make a difference in a patient’s
experience by providing accurate and
timely results that can lead to a faster
diagnosis,” says Dr. Warren White,
with Coastal Carolina Pathology.
A common scenario might be the
analysis of a mole suspected of being
cancerous. Skin cancer is a huge issue
— one of the most frequently seen
malignancies in clinical medicine.
“We receive 100 skin biopsies per
day, and 40 percent of those are
skin cancers,” says Dr. White. “That
comes to a total of 10,000 skin cancers per year, most on sun-damaged
skin. And that is from Wilmington area residents alone.”
With skin cancer, it is possible to take your health into your own hands:
limit sun exposure, wear sunscreen and take care to cover up exposed skin.
Also, perform self-exams and see a dermatologist if you notice skin changes
or new lesions. Dr. White advises: “If you notice anything changing, grow-ing
or bleeding on your skin, see your dermatologist. Skin cancer is highly
curable when caught early.”
