Internal
Medicine
Think of Internal Medicine
doctors, or Internists, as the
first point of contact for
most adult patients when something’s
just not feeling right. Internists also
serve as skilled medical detectives,
sometimes working with specialists to
treat specific diseases. “What we do
is take care of well and sick patients
above the age of 16 who demonstrate
a wide range of illnesses,” says Dr.
Chris Cosgrove, with Intracoastal
Internal Medicine.
Dr. Cosgrove says there is a new
focus in preventative medicine in
his field. “We are trying to ward
off diseases before they happen,” he
says. One of the main issues in this
regard is weight control, “because
being overweight can lead and con-tribute
to so many dangerous health
conditions, particularly diabetes.”
In this regard, surgical weight loss
has become quite a hot topic. And
for those who are not candidates for
such a procedure, a focus on main-taining
a healthy lifestyle is crucial.
“Preventative medicine is the wave of
the future,” he says. “Sure, we have
new medications that help treat ill-ness,
but it is always best to fend it
off up front.”
