Cardiology
With heart disease holding the
spot as the number one cause
of death in the United States,
cardiology — the diagnosis and treatment
of diseases of the heart and vascular system
— is as important as ever. “Many of these
deaths can be prevented with appropriate
early evaluation and treatment,” says Dr.
William P. Buchanan,, a cardiologist with
Coastal Cardiology Associates. “But every
person must take ownership of their own
health and determine their own risk for
developing cardiovascular disease.”
That means doing the obvious, but not
always the easiest, “stuff” — avoid smok-ing,
eat healthy (big limits on saturated
fat) and know your cholesterol count.
And exercise daily. “I strongly encourage
everyone to commit to exercising,” says
Dr. Buchanan, “for at least
30 minutes up to five days
a week, if possible. We need to use our
bodies in order to remain healthy.” He
adds that if you do have a cardiac event,
such as a heart attack, cardiac rehabilita-tion
is extremely important. Active, com-mitted
participation in a cardiac rehab
program can result in a return to a nor-mal
and usually much healthier life for
most patients.
The good news is that even if you are
unable to prevent heart trouble, new
advancements in technology make recov-ery
likely. For example, Dr. Buchanan
mentions that hypothermia therapy for
patients who are successfully resuscitated
outside of the hospital — but remain
in a coma — has resulted in improved
survival. Also, very rapid treatment time
for patients experiencing heart attacks
and advancements in minimally invasive
mitral valve surgery techniques offer
promise and hope.
