Union Lieutenant R. Sheldon McCook commanded the USS
Stars and Stripes when the Modern Greece attempted to break
the blockade of New Inlet and enter the Cape Fear River.
Zachariah C. Pearson
Soon after the blockade-runner Modern Greece ran aground
near Fort Fisher in the early morning hours of June 27, 1862, her
owner, Londoner Zachariah C. Pearson, declared bankruptcy.
Colonel Collett Leventhorpe
Confederate Colonel Collett Leventhorpe of the
11th North Carolina Infantry initially supervised the rescue
of supplies from the Modern Greece.
