The English freighter Modern Greece was the first steamship to
be taken out of commission in 1862 while trying to evade the
Union naval blockade of Wilmington, North Carolina during
the Civil War. The artist of this painting is unknown. One of the
COURTESY painting’s anomalies is the depiction of the Union ironclad which
would not have appeared in Wilmington for another three years.
