up front
This month offers another amazing lineup of
really good reading.
Y
ou see them all over the
waterways, people standing
on what looks to be
a surfboard with a broom in their hand,
sweeping the water. The relatively new
sport of standup paddleboarding or SUP is
not new however, just new to our shores.
This area has rapidly commanded national
and international attention for its access
to different outstanding water conditions.
More and more women
are taking to the sport of
paddling. In fact while
my granddaughter Zoie
and friend Haley, pictured,
were visiting this
summer they sampled
standup paddleboarding
and thoroughly enjoyed
a kayaking lesson.
There are times that
one of our team will be
out in the community
and we’ll see something
that inspires a great
future story. The idea
is set into motion, culminating somewhere
down the road in a magazine feature for
you, the reader.
Such was the case with this month’s
Sketches of Artisans, as we take a look at
the craftsmen who build custom cabinets.
It was my visit to Mike Powell’s cabinet
shop a year or two ago that inspired this
story. Unbeknownst to me, while there,
I was witnessing cabinetmakers engaged
in various stages of finishing the exquisite
cabinetry that would later be installed in
September’s fabulous Home of Distinction.
The activity of the shop coupled with the
beauty of the unfinished product designed

for this home compelled the production of
this behind-the-scenes feature.
Our documentary about the shrimping
industry illustrated by Allison Potter’s
spectacular action shots provides a glimpse
into a once bountiful way of life that has
all but died out in this area due to tampering
by man: polluted waters, over fishing
and some say — beach renourishment.
Bluegrass musicians grace our cover this
month in a fun shot to accompany
our piece Good Company which looks at
the evolution of the area’s robust bluegrass
scene. Speaking of robust, you’ll not
want to miss our whimsical piece on the
Best Food I Ever Ate and a menu of dishes
named by local celebrities.
And believe it or not there are only 12
weeks until Christmas, so turn to the gift
guide to start thinking about buying local
this year.
Be a blessing to someone today as you
enjoy these cooler fall days, cold air will be
here all too soon!
