says she was challenged by her eggs and
this lovely “egg” was one of her “mistakes.”

On a gloriously warm winter
day in January, as we worked
to finish this month’s won-derful
magazine, my favorite
radio station played the classic hymn
by Horatio Spafford, “It Is Well With
My Soul.” The song that day was and
still is fitting.
Time consuming and hair-on-fire
intense as always, this year’s 12th annual
Real Estate Roundup is an eye-opening
look back at what happened in New
Hanover County in the real estate
market — a market that is definitely
rebounding. Turn to that section to
see where your interests fall.
As I noted, this is a wonderful
issue. Deviating this year from our
annual people and their pets, we
bring you the whimsical, When Dogs
& Art Collide, a story about three
accomplished artists and their distinct
approaches to pet portraits.
For those looking forward to the
sequel on noted architect Haywood
Newkirk, you will not be disap-pointed.
The breathtaking photos of
Newkirk’s last house for his son and
namesake are a fitting reminder of
the greatness of the elder Haywood’s
genius.
To honor this month of love,
you’ll find the stories of how four
of the area’s notable couples met and
how their love grew; one couple that
met in a cemetery; an East Coast girl
who found love on the West Coast; an
over-the-top costumed wedding, and the
couple I think of fondly as the Captain
and his Lady.
For history buffs or anyone that loves
ferry rides, we’ve uncovered the little-
known story of Blossom’s Ferry, which
once carried travelers across the river —
the northern county line — to Pender
County.
This month’s food section features
Thai, one of my favorites. Join us as we
delve into yummy Asian noodle dishes
from the perspective of four chefs from
four local restaurants. I so enjoyed the
research on this one.
In Beach Bites you will find a Basket
of Eggs, hand-crafted for us by clay artist
Sybil West. These porcelain eggs are just
one “batch” of egg creations to be auc-tioned
at this year’s Cape Fear Literacy
Council gala fundraiser on March 2. The
theme is Breakfast at Tiffany’s, a perfect
match for raising money to combat adult
illiteracy. This feature plus our invitation
to area artists to create these marvelous
eggs is dedicated to our friend Teresa
Kramer, who for years wanted to see us
feature cool eggs at Easter time. It is our
tribute to her many years of excellence as
our teammate.
You’ll read more about this in next
month’s issue.
Be blessed.
