Eight Island beach
home, defining the

open living and

“And so sim-ple,”
Camp adds.
“The views are
extraordinary.”
From the upper

see the ocean.
“I’ve got great views

Camp says.

into the living
area below, Newkirk
says, “This is where
you understand the
scale. You still feel
comfortable. It’s not
out of scale. There’s
a difference between
scale and vacuous-ness.
You gotta hit it
just right.”
Because the central
part of the living
area was so far away
from its light source,
Newkirk added a sky-light
at the apex
of the roof pitch.
Clad in white juniper,
the gently sloped
and vaulted ceiling
is like an inverted
ship’s hull.
“It’s kind of like
sitting on a boat,”
Newkirk says.
