15 When Dogs & Art Collide
When dogs express their owners’ personalities, three
local artists are there to capture their best sides on
canvas and paper. Clair Hartmann, Mary James
Atkinson and John Golden take us into their studios
for an intimate look at their process and why these
accomplished artists’ careers have gone to the dogs.

24 In Residence with
Haywood Newkirk
The last house he designed for his eldest son and
one of his earliest works designed for a favorite client
illustrate Haywood Newkirk’s classic contemporary
idiom for residential living on Airlie Road and Figure
Eight Island. In residence on Wrightsville Beach,
Newkirk keeps a sketch pad nearby, ready for the
next commission. By Marimar McNaughton
36 Love Knows No Mapquest
True love, we’re told, finds us when and where we least
expect it — in Oakdale Cemetery, in an App State dorm
room, a California surf shop and at an Easter sunrise
service on Wrightsville Beach. In these random places,
our happily married couples found each other by
chance, the old fashioned way. By Jamie Lynn Miller
47 Blossom’s Ferry
One man’s obsession with maritime history uncovered
a Castle Hayne ferry landing dating back to the 18th
century. Named for old man Blossom, its last owner, the
ferry carried buggies and livestock across the Northeast
Cape Fear River for nearly 200 years. By Jamie Walker

69 SAVOR: Noodles
Simple on the surface, layered with complexity, the
aromatic and savory, spicy sweet and crunchy, slippery
Asian noodle dish is a favorite go-to comfort food.
Influenced by Vietnamese traders and the Thai rice
noodle, area chefs draw on personal history, family
heritage or worldly travels to recreate Far East flavors
for East Coast diners. By Cole Dittmer
