40 American Gothic
Hearts Apart, Brownie Harris’ and Brett Martin’s award-winning
photographic outreach mission, started in Wilmington,
North Carolina, three years ago. It touches couples and families
before deployment. Across America, servicemen and women
pose with loved ones for keepsake photos to kindle flames on
the battlefield and keep the home fires burning.

50 Chasing the Wind
A growing number of thrill-seekers are gearing up for the
season’s southerly summer winds — perfect conditions
for attaining speeds of more than 30 miles per hour. Displays
of daring aerials are the norm for extreme kitesurfers. Their air-borne
antics have become a Wrightsville Beach phenomenon.

60 True North on the South End
With a 3.0 Energy Star rating, Kel Landis and Nina Szlosberg-Landis’
south end summer home, designed by Scott Sullivan and built
by Jimmy Doster, is Wrightsville’s most energy efficient to
date. Committed to sourcing North Carolina furnishings and
finishes, it’s a fitting retreat for this high-profile Raleigh couple
inspired by the Bill George philosophy, “True North.”

76 The Quintessential Bubba
This spring, Cape Fear troubadour Chris Bellamy released
“Bubbafied,” his ninth album of original songs and ballads.
Nashville music reviewer Russell Johnson writes: “Chris
Bellamy’s newest album combines infectious melodies with
‘gotcha now’ stories that come together like a great bowl of
gumbo with some jalapeño cornbread on the side.”
