on the cover
On January 14, WBM director of
photography Allison Breiner Potter
hauled her considerable gear onto
the deck of the fabulous Battleship
North Carolina for a very special photo
session with one of the ship’s oldest
and most beautiful crew members:
the century old, 100-plus magnificent
pieces of presentation silver that
are carefully displayed in the ship’s
wardroom. “Silver is one of the most
technically challenging things to photograph,”
says ABP, who was charged
with capturing a unique and memorable
shot for our cover, a shot that
would stand up to the silver’s long
and storied history and somehow
depict the immeasurable beauty and
artistry of the set. Not to worry. At
11:30 a.m., using a Nikon D300 with a
60mm micro lens, Allison focused on
one of the sea dog legs of a magnificent
match holder and caught a cover
we’ll never forget. —RL

16 Legacy of Excellence
For more than a century, 100-plus magnificent pieces
of presentation silver have served the state of North
Carolina and the United States Navy on ships and in

include the state Capitol and seal, tobacco plants, pine
boughs, cotton bolls, nautical themes and the silver
set’s first home — the USS North Carolina armored
cruiser. By Michelle Saxton

45 Savor: Fine Dining
Over the last 20 years, Historic Downtown Wilmington
has become a bustling center for great restaurants and
nightlife, including these excellent Port City eateries
that may not have starched-white tablecloths and $300
entrees, but whose food is worthy of five stars and the
well-earned title of fine dining. By Gregory Tyler Loftis
