A page from the Bermuda customs records dated September 1864 details the departure of Condor from St. George’s for Halifax, Canada,
where she picked up a Confederate official before running for Wilmington. Inset, from left: A porthole from Condor, photographed while
on display at the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Southport. Confederate spy Rose Greenhow was the only casualty when Condor
ran aground. According to one legend, the weight of the gold sewn into her dress pulled her under the waves as she tried to flee the ship
in fear of capture. A painting by Florida artist Martin Peebles depicts the capsizing of the lifeboat containing Greenhow.
