Once again, I’ve fallen into serious “like”
with something from our pages.
HIS TIME it is pickleball, a fun, fast game
played on half of a tennis courts with an
enlarged paddle and an odd-looking ball. And
even though I didn’t follow through on my
intention to get in on the group lessons at the
T
Wrightsville Beach courts, I am hoping to still be invited to
local play. It is too much fun.
Three of our June features ventured underwater. Two are
intriguing underwater diving stories.
Anchoring the cover and illustrating our feature on com-mercial
spear fishing, or as I like to call it the sea-to-table
movement, is Allison Potter’s live action shot of commercial
spear fisherman Albie Solano’s boat Orion arriving at the
Motts Channel dock with a fresh catch.
Just as riveting is the story of the Condor, the Civil War
blockade runner lying close offshore at Fort Fisher. The
Condor was on her maiden voyage with Confederate spy
Rose Greenhow aboard. The wreck is the state’s very first
Heritage Dive Site.
Our art feature lights up its pages with Dennis Schaefer’s
amazing use of color, including Fort Fisher’s, trademark
bent live oak trees within sight of the Condor’s final resting
place.
Then we have a look at the tricked-out sports fishing
boats being built by Donnie Caison. We unfortunately
left Caison, a local boat builder, completely out of “Sea
State,” our cover feature on North Carolina boat builders
in May 2015. Richard Johnson alerted us to our oversight
and inspired us to postscript this standalone feature.
Continuing our summer-heralding, water-themed
edition, we take a look at rain gardens, an effective way
to funnel stormwater runoff to keep it out of our sur-rounding
upfront

waterways, sounds and creeks.
Our building of distinction this month provides a
look
inside the distinctive forest-themed Medac facility in
Porters Neck and identifies the method to their madness
in the stunning
architecture choices the owners made with this uncommercial-looking exterior for a medical building.
Don’t miss Savor with its in-depth look at fermented foods; I am loving this delicious way to keep “the gut” in order.
Happy and blessed June!
