A trip to hallowed ground
Story and Photos by Pat Bradford
North Carolina State Monument, facing Cemetery Ridge, marks the spot where North Carolina troops began their part in Pickett’s
Charge. The bronze monument to the 26th and 43rd North Carolina Infantry regiments depicts a wounded officer pointing the way
forward to the enemy while a veteran and younger comrade lead a color bearer in the charge. Using photographs of Confederate
veterans as models, the statue was sculpted by Gutzon Borglum, the artist who also completed Mount Rushmore.
