60 American Eclectic
Passionate about red {white and blue}, Estelle and
Johnnie Baker celebrate Fourth of July all year long at
their Low Country cottage designed as a home away
from home for chirren and grandchirren.
By Marimar McNaughton
69 Retro Wrightsville
Robert Holst’s fine art graphic images of Wrightsville’s
iconic landmarks are like tonic— a cool breath of sea
air on a vapidly hot summer afternoon. The clean, lean
lines of his graphic designs and the dense pigment
of his simple, yet saturated palette bring yesterday’s
beach to life. By Jordan Smith
83 Savor: Homegrown
From nouvelle cuisine’s herb gardens to chef-owned
farms, local culinary artists are delighting their diners
with fare from the farm to the table. It’s a feast for the
senses from the seaboard to the city, chalk it up as the
catch of the day. By Jason Frye and Sara Leary

25 Bucket & Shovel List
Whether you’re new in town or just showing guests
around, this handy guide reveals our secret insider’s list
of things to do while visiting Wrightsville Beach, including
our faves on the other side of the drawbridge.
33 The Boat Pack
These seven teens grew up onboard. All graduates of
the Coast Guard Auxiliary’s Safe Boating Course, they
ply the waterway looking for fish and a few kicks.

40 For the Birds
Pelagic seabirds roost, mate, nest and hatch on a string
of uninhabited islands in the Cape Fear River. Colonies
of pelicans, egrets, terns and gulls flock by the thousands
to these remote outposts closely watched by the
North Carolina Audubon Society. By Jenny Yarborough
50 Charming Gardens
One landscape architect uncovers the pathway to
bliss with a peek inside this trio of private gardens.
By Pamela Kersting
Walker Golder, Jenny Yarborough and I left the Wildlife Resources Commission public boat ramp at Snow’s Cut at 7 a.m. on
May 31 to capture nice light in cooler temperatures. At our first stop on North Pelican Island, the smell of the birds greeted us
before we cruised closer for a bird’s eye view. Some images I photographed from the boat, others on land under Walker’s specific
direction about where and how to walk. The great egrets and cattle egrets that landed elegantly on our cover this month
intrigued me with their graceful necks and movement. One of my favorite shoots to date! — Allison Breiner Potter
