on the cover
Torn between two terrific cover ideas,
Emily Colin’s excellent Worth Saving
and October’s annual Pink Ribbon
Project, we turned to the awesome
Allison Breiner Potter, WBM’s director
of photography, to save the day. Boy
did she! On Wednesday, September
15, one of those clear sky/still water
days that Wrightsville is famous for,
Allison and paddleboarder Bev Veals
(page 13, Beach Bites), an athlete,
activist, breast cancer survivor and
model for the Ta Ta Sisterhood of the
Cape Fear 2011 Calendar, met on the
sound side of WB’s north end. At 5:45
p.m., using a Nikon D300 with an 18-
70mm lens, Allison captured everything

24 With Great Biodiversity Comes
Great Responsibility
Three local organizations have taken on the considerable
challenge of protecting our fisheries, waterways and
wetlands — from the Green Swamp to the Black River and
beyond. By Emily Colin
32 Keeping the Color
Those few late summer months can leave the natives looking
a little peaked. And the frozen, nearly humorless February
soil sends shivers through tough but frosty camellia buds
destined to brown and drop. It is dreary garden days such as
these that leave the home gardener pining for the solace and
reprieve that a little color brings to an otherwise bleak landscape.

38 HOD: live|work|home
Busy photographer Millie Holloman’s circa 1911 Nun Street
bungalow is a live/work/home studio. An artistic place that
blurs the line between passion and profession.

57 WBM Weddings
Five great grooms. Five beautiful brides. Five fun stories.
Five fabulous weddings. From Airlie, to Orton, to Wrightsville
Beach, if it’s October, it’s time for WBM to take a fresh look at
love and marriage on the Azalea Coast. By Amanda Thames
62 The World Famous Spot
It was known as “The World Famous Spot,” though the sign
hanging outside the door at 22 North Lumina from 1955 to
1973 read simply, “The Spot.” Like everything else about this
bar and restaurant, its elevation to “World Famous” status is
recorded in the hearts, minds and voices of the people who
stepped through its doors. By Skip Maloney
68 Savor: Ten (Plus One) Great Places to Eat
on the Water
Here on the Cape Fear Coast, we love the waterfront. We also
love our local restaurants. And we especially love when those
two things come together in perfect harmony. Need help
deciding where to go tonight? No problem. By Justin Jacobs
