UNITED WAY
The United Way celebrated the
beginning of another fundraising
season on August 25 in Airlie Gardens
with its annual kickoff. Dinner was
served to United Way sponsors and
supporters while some organizations
— AT&T, Piedmont Natural Gas, Cape
Fear Literacy Council and United Way
employees and board members
presented checks from last year’s
fundraising season. Money was raised
toward United Way’s Community
Betterment fund. Last year, more than
$55,000 was raised. Paul McCombie,
United Way City Executive, says,
“Money raised in the Cape Fear area
stays in the Cape Fear area and goes
toward funding nonprofit health and
human services programs.”
LAST CHANCE FOR
WHITE PANTS GALA
It was a flood of white pants, skirts,
dresses and shirts at the annual Lower
Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter’s
Last Chance For White Pants Gala at
the Hilton Wilmington Riverside on
Friday, August 30. Nearly 600 attendees
were on hand to sample the heavy
hors d’oeuvres, listen to lively tunes
from Mo’ Sol and support Hospice’s
end-of-life services. Event chairwoman
Lisa Weeks says the event raised around
$50,000 for Hospice’s general operating
expenses.
