I sat down one morning under the
Crystal Pier and waited for some
shore birds to pose for our barrier
island ecology story. This willet,
Catoptrophorus semipalmatus,
came along and decided to make
a breakfast of the mole crabs just
below the surface of the beach. It
darted to and fro, avoiding waves
and the occasional jogger, stop-ping
long enough to dip its beak in
the sand for a meal. — Allison Potter
