Since 1967, GE has been an
important part of the local
community. We take our
responsibility to be a good steward of
the environment seriously. We are
also dedicated to being a good
neighbor and employer.
WE PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT
Nestled on more than 1,600
mostly wooded acres is the global
headquarters of GE Hitachi. The
company designs the world’s safest
nuclear reactors, safely manufactures
fuel for nuclear facilities and
employees more than 2,000 local
residents on the site. Some of the
foremost nuclear engineers and
technical experts in the world live,
work and play right here in our
own community.
Our Castle Hayne headquarters site
was recently certified a National
Wildlife Habitat, with more than 1,300
acres of preserved land adjacent to
the Cape Fear River. The site is a
complex ecosystem, home to a wide
variety of birds, deer, turkey, bear,
alligators and other animals.
Environmental experts closely
monitor our activities on site and in
the surrounding area and community
through water, air, soil samples and
other means to ensure we are
minimizing our impact on the
community.
On site, we have a robust forestry
program to improve the habitat for
the many species that live here, and
we have added more than 50
hand-crafted bluebird houses to
increase the local bird population. We
also make every effort to use native
landscaping and designate natural
meadows, which allows added
nesting and protection to our wildlife.
Beyond the site, GE Hitachi volunteers
have helped to restore local coastal
ecosystems with the North Carolina
Coastal Federation, and we have
participated in National Estuaries
Day to preserve the habitats of
oysters and shorebirds. It’s important
to us that we positively impact our
local ecosystems.
WE INVEST IN OUR COMMUNITY
Protecting our environment is only
the start of our involvement in the
community. Last year, GE Hitachi
employees volunteered more than
5,500 hours, supporting important
programs including United Way, Work
on Wilmington, March of Dimes,
Surfers Healing and many others. In
fact, we are the largest contributor to
United Way of the Cape Fear area,
with over $500,000 in employee
contributions last year alone. This
represents approximately 25 percent
of the overall funding in the Cape
Fear region.
GE Hitachi’s efforts to protect the
environment and invest in our
community have never been greater
than they are today. As one of the
county’s largest employers, it is our
honor and responsibility to give back
to the local community.
