The three cottages on Bald Head Island known as Captain Charlie’s Station were named for Captain
Charles Norton Swan. Swan was a keeper at the Cape Fear Lighthouse from 1903, the year of its
completion, to 1933. Use of the lighthouse was discontinued in 1958, and the structure was later
demolished. Captain Charlie’s Station sits south of the former lighthouse’s location, overlooking Bald
Head Island’s southeastern point, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
