The Velva-lure suit in this ad (right) is red with
a daisy border. The fella is home on leave
during WWII and his girl may be hinting for a
proposal with her daisy refrain “he loves me,
he loves me not …” as she pulls each petal
from the flower. He is listening attentively
while looking very handsome wearing his
dog tags and wool knit bathing trunks. The
ad also encourages readers to buy war
bonds to “be free to enjoy tomorrow.”

Men’s Jantzen
In the late 30s and early 40s men began wearing brief
trunks without an upper, a garment similar to a tank
top. This size 34 Jantzen suit is made of green wool in
a basket weave design. An adjustable web belt sports
the famous Jantzen swim girl logo on the buckle. It has
a buttoned pocket for a key or coins and has a sporty
stripe on each side. Behind the mock fly is a lining from
the waist to the crotch seam. The label indicates that
lastex is woven in the wool, which gives it some stretch.
