In 1983, the Colonial Athletic Association was formed
in association with the National Collegiate Athletic
Association with only seven teams in the conference.
Now, 28 years after its origin, the CAA has 12 members
including the University of North Carolina Wilmington
Seahawks.
From May 26-28, the CAA baseball championship will be held at
UNCW’s Brooks Field for the eighth straight year. Out of the 12 conference
teams, the top four will compete in the tournament. Last year
in extra innings, the Virginia Commonwealth University Rams won
the tournament beating the Seahawks, which have placed second
for two consecutive years. UNCW baseball coach Mark Scalf says he’s
grateful for the experience of hosting the tournament. “The community
has been tremendous in supporting our program and the
tournament. It’s been fun.”
It’s expected that teams such as Virginia Commonwealth
University, James Madison University and UNCWv among others, are
contenders for the final four.
Brooks Field is located on the UNCW campus at 601 South College
Road opposite Belk Hall. Tournament passes are $15 for adults and
$12 for ages 6-12. Day passes are $10 for adults and $5 for children.
Students from participating colleges will be admitted free with a valid
student ID. For tickets, visit www.caasports.com or call the UNCW
athletics ticket office at (910) 962-3233. — By Travis Lane
