60 Neighborhood Living
A unique sense of community exists among downtown
residents of the Wilmington Historic District, where neigh-bors
visit on front porches and often share meals. This
sense of neighborhood was an irresistible draw for Jef
Bates and Robert Millar, who live and work in New York.
And it culminated for them in a New American Farmhouse
set smack in the middle of the historic district, complete
with a saltwater pool and pool house.

It is all the rage, but millennials didn’t discover the avo-cado
— it has been cultivated since 5000 BC. The story of
the avocado most American consumers choose at the gro-cery
store has Mr. Rudolph Hass, a Los Angeles mailman,
purchasing a seedling from a farmer in 1926. His children
convinced him to patent the Hass avocado, which soon
became the bestselling avocado variety in the country. In
high-end Mexican eateries preparing it, guacamole has
been elevated to table side; see our DIY.

Marnina Queen is the board CEO of the $48-million
county alcohol beverage sales enterprise. One way
this former U.S. Air Force medic handles the pressure
of running such a high-profile operation is by playing
her vintage Lyle guitar, handcrafted in Japan with
mother of pearl fret inlays and etched pic guard.

I’ve always been intrigued by
the design of this staircase at the
Bellamy Mansion in downtown
Wilmington. It made the perfect
backdrop for a summertime

Control Board for New Hanover
County, with her vintage Lyle
Hummingbird guitar.
