Alexandra Morse speaks to
guests during the opening
of her show, “Art in the Dark:
Under the Surface,” on October
25, 2013, at the Art Factory.
Left: Aztec Turtle with Two
Jellyfish, 31.75 x 19.5 inches,
mixed media on canvas, shown
in daylight and glowing in
the dark at night. The turtle is
papier-mâché wrapped over
plastic grocery bags and a
six-pack ring holder on shell
painted with an Aztec design.
The eye is an old Christmas tree
light bulb from the late ’80s.
The jellyfish are plastic mesh
bags and papier-mâché with
plastic draped over and plastic
grass as tentacles. Everything
is outlined in glow paint and
sealed with a gallery-grade
archival varnish. Morse uses
plastic that has been disposed
of or retrieved from the ocean.
