Most workdays I am stuck inside at my computer.
But every now and then, I find myself outside
on an adventure.
UCH WAS THE CASE when creating a
hot summer cover for this month. A team
of us gathered poolside at the YWCA
Lower Cape Fear one Friday in June.
Photographer Allison Potter donned
scuba gear, our cover model Alexandra Morse dove to
the bottom, and the adventure kicked into high gear.
It was a glorious day at the women’s Y. We had great
favor. The staff and members could not have been
more kind or accommodating.
You’ll find more photos of Alexandra on pages
48-51; they were too spectacular to confine to just
the cover.
This is a summer blockbuster issue of great read-ing.
From an in-depth look at the sand under your
beach towel by UNCW geology and environmental
science professor Roger Shew, to the often-hilar-ious
tales of the fisherman who heads the North
Carolina Marine Fisheries Commission, Sammy
Corbett, you don’t want to miss a word.
A spinoff from last month’s remarkable com-mercial
spearfishing story is July’s Savor, “Eat Them
to Beat Them,” about invasive lionfish. Who knew
this former aquarium exotic released into the wild
would balloon up to 3 pounds and be in high
demand for dinner? And we have recipes.
Don’t miss One Love goes to Wimbledon (and
Israel), the latest installment of our ongoing cover-age
of this great nonprofit youth tennis program.
Not one but two art features await you: Nicole
Kennedy, who paints the beloved “Beach People”
series inspired by years spent at Wrightsville
Beach, plus a trio of creative painters includ-ing
just-married Allison Hunt Cooper and our

aquatic cover model.
And then there is Bitty & Beau’s. This is
the awe-inspiring story of how Ben and Amy Wright’s desire to match job seekers with intellectual and developmental disabilities to
employers became an acclaimed coffee shop that is a platform for joyous interaction between individuals with IDD and the world.
