Attending the North Carolina
Holiday Flotilla is a Thanksgiving
weekend tradition for many families
in and around Wrightsville Beach —
and for a couple of photographers.
I ride my bike through the crowds,
loaded down with cameras and
tripod. Contributing photographer
Beth Hedgepeth and I stand on a
dock and speculate about which
boats will win awards. But the most
photogenic event is the fireworks
display, when neon colors fill the
sky and reflect off the surface of
Banks Channel. — ALLISON POTTER

54 Homemade International Aid
A small Wilmington nonprofit with a three-person
paid staff and a slew of volunteers is making a huge
global impact. The Full Belly Project is fighting
hunger in impoverished communities by creating
time- and labor-saving products that allow people
in developing nations a chance for sustainability
and economic growth. By Charlotte Smith
62 Abandoning Form and
Embracing the Abstract
Look at a timeline of artist Peggy Vineyard’s work
and journey through an evolution from naturalism
to nonobjective. Vineyard embraced a favorite local
subject matter, the oyster, and continues to develop
her nonrepresentational style. By Kathryn Manis
68 Rooms With a View
The lure of the water prompted a Raleigh couple
to accelerate their five-year plan to build their own
coastal oasis. Now their open-concept home on
Futch Creek, with large unspoiled views over the
Intracoastal Waterway and their infinity pool, is a
relaxing and peaceful getaway from the hustle and
bustle. By Simon Gonzalez
88 Culture, Heritage & Green Beans
Slow-simmered green beans are a classic comfort dish
for fall and a favorite at the Southern dinner table.
Serving up a dish of beans simmered in potlikker is
a delicious way to revive an important antebellum
dietary staple. Toss the soggy green bean casserole
and try this generations-old recipe for fresh green
beans in a savory broth. By Colleen Thompson

19 Boxes of Books
Little Free Libraries have popped up in neighborhoods
across New Hanover County, including in Wrightsville
Beach. The boxes operate on a simple premise — take
a book, leave a book. Operated by stewards who keep
them stocked, they encourage communities to read.

22 Committed to Craftsmanship
Ten years ago, a group of Wilmington-area potters
borrowed from the past to enhance and promote
their present-day art, forming the Coastal Carolina
Clay Guild. All are welcome to join — from young
to old, professional to hobbyist — to share ideas,
exchange knowledge and preserve the ceramic arts.

26 Digging Local History
Much of Wilmington’s rich history lies underground.
The town’s Public Archaeology Corps was founded in
2013 to help its residents discover the valuable artifacts
buried all around them. The organization is a unique
way for everyday people, not just experts, to become
involved with excavating and preserving these treasures.

38 Welcome Home & Thank You for
Your Sacrifice
In WBM’s special commemoration of Veterans Day, we
explore America’s changing attitudes toward Vietnam
veterans in the 40-plus years since the end of the
Vietnam War. Five Vietnam veterans with local ties
share their stories of combat, their return stateside,
and the decades-long struggle for acknowledgment
and acceptance. By Cindy Ramsey
46 Serving Those Who Served
Nearly five years ago, a new veterans clinic opened
in Wilmington: a sprawling 100,000-square-foot facility,
offering increased services and local care. Today
the doctors and staff there meet the challenges of
a growing veteran demographic and provide much
needed care to a deserving population.
