17 Profiles in Literacy
Some students can’t read or struggle to at early grade
levels; some have lost their job or want to improve
their prospects; some adapt to changing technology
or simply long to read to their grandchildren. Others
are learning to speak English for the first time. Decoding
the adult language barrier is Cape Fear Literacy
Council’s mission. By Michelle Saxton
24 Artful Eggs Benefit
Breakfast Auction
“Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” the gala auction that benefits
the Cape Fear Literacy Council, will be all the richer
this year for the donation of artist-designed eggs
contributed by Bill Donaldson, Sybil West, Dumay
Gorham III, Michelle Connolly, Fritzi Huber and Alan
Perry. Feast your eyes in this WBM-sponsored preview,
then book passage to the Air Wilmington Hangar
for the grand finale on March 2.
30 Double Vision
Fishing from the same gene pool, architects Michael
Moorefield and Michael Kersting designed parent
homes and tiny knockoffs for clients seeking multiple
structures on amply-scaled lots on the Intracoastal
Waterway and Pages Creek. Working in radically
different styles for different sets of clients, each
architect achieved a unity of design. By Cole Dittmer
44 Carolina Bays
The Carolina Bay is a conundrum for experts who
study the origins of this mystifying water-filled land
formation. Seen from the sky, they resemble an
oval depression in the landscape. On foot, they are
characterized by a swampy, wetland ecosystem host,
to the Venus fly trap and other exotic species.

54 Whale Trouble
When a 54-foot sperm whale beaches in Wrightsville
in 1928, it only spells one word: Trouble. One man,
H. H. Brimley, would not relinquish his quest to salvage
the whale and the largest skeleton of its kind in
America, which now hangs in the North Carolina
Museum of Science and History. By Daniel Bowden
62 A Guide for the Novice Gardener
With camellias in bloom all winter long, Southern
gardens never truly sleep. As Earth tosses its Northern
Hemisphere into spring this month, Daylight Savings
Time returns to lengthen the days while the sun’s rays
strengthen. Seasoned gardeners know what to do, but
novices may learn from some how-to. By Jeff Minnich
69 SAVOR: Risen
Greek tsoureki braided into loaves or coiled into
wreaths are baked with whole, colored eggs; Polish
babka and paska served in slices like cake, British
hot cross buns, and American honeyed bunnies are
customs steeped in religious significance and new
traditions inspired by childlike whimsy, shared during
Easter celebrations. By Brandy Brinson
Twelve decorated rooms will
be showcased this month
during the Bellamy Mansion’s
Art of the Table. In 2011, Terry
Allred was the designer for the
Blockade Runner Beach Resort’s
installation staged in the
downstairs parlor. The tableaux
was set for a lobster dinner at
East, the resort’s fine dining
restaurant; a luncheon on the
outdoor deck; and a wedding
reception by the water.
