motion detection
Lights with motion sensors are installed in the pantry (below, far left) as well as underneath
the hanging edge of the island to illuminate a floor-level eating area for the Gurleys’ dogs.

Range & Hood
One of the most fascinating aspects of
the kitchen is a commercial hood made
of wood that’s been faux painted to look
like limestone. The pot filler directly
behind the range is surrounded by handpanted
Tuscan tiles. The kitchen also has
a warming drawer and two convection
ovens.
Two slide-out spice racks
flank the gas range. Carved corbels funtioning
as drawer pulls.

Island in the stream
Taking center stage is
the vast island. In addition
to its old-world feel,
Donna wanted something
substanial enough to handle
entertaining large groups of
friends.
“I am a ‘big’ person—one
of my sayings is ‘go big or
go home,’” Donna explains,
adding that when it came to
the island, it couldn’t be big
enough. “When Alice first started…I walked
in and said, ‘I want it bigger.’ The only hangup
was that this is about as big of a piece of
granite as you can get without a seam.”
High-backed stools arranged along
one side sit in front of even more storage
cabinets.
The 10-foot slab of Delicatus
White granite from Sellers Tile has a
sculpted, long ogee edge.
