race creator and chairman Shawn
Spencer, left, and Matt Wisthoff get air
on Wrightsville’s beach strand on a cold,
clear morning in January. The natural
landscape, made challenging through
erosion, provided plenty of opportunities
for bump jumps and other tricks.

Second Chance
More than 1,500 Wilmington-area kids have
received a bicycle from A Bike for Every Child,

26 Beach Ranger
Wrightsville’s first full-time park ranger has
been on the job for 17 years, but he says
he never gets bored. Shannon Slocum, the
friendly face known to many, has a constantly
shifting landscape, along with beachgoers
and a wide array of wildlife, that keep his job
interesting — and important — every day.

32 Photographs and Memories
An afternoon of browsing an old photo album
with George Clark is a walk into Wrightsville
Beach’s nostalgic past. The soon to be
90-year-old lifelong resident of the island
recalls the days when trucks came ‘round
daily to deliver blocks of ice, Jimmie Lunceford
played at Lumina, and visitors arrived by
trolley for a day at the seaside.

44 Hold the Salt
Desalination, the process of removing salt
from seawater to make it potable, was once
only viable in our imaginations. But today it
isa reality, with desalination plants in arid
countries like Israel and Saudi Arabia. Could
desalination work locally?

58 Light, Color and Quick
Movements
Southport artist and Wrightsville Beach native
Rena Powell believes the ability to paint is just
as much about hard work as it is about inborn
ability. When she revived her childhood interest
in painting, she discovered a newfound love
for the plein air style, devotedly fostering and
developing her signature style — capturing
color and light from real life.

66 Uniquely Designed
Three businesses along the Eastwood Road
corridor offer distinctive, very different archi-tectural
designs that reveal eye-catching style
while hinting at the services of the businesses
housed within. Learn the stories behind the
architectural choices and discover how the
design elements serve the businesses.

90 Cooking Root-to-Stem
About one-third of the 1.3 billion tons of food
produced every year for human consumption
is lost or wasted. A trendy effort by chefs and
food industry professionals, the root-to-stem
movement, seeks to drastically reduce this food
waste. The movement seeks to inspire all cooks
to find purposes for every part of the plant.
