Real Estate
Roundup is a lot
like herding cats, while being
in a sci-fi movie, but as I
finish my 17th annual look
back at sales, I am smiling.
It has been a good year.
In a real estate-driven
economy such as ours,
when they do well we
all do well. The serious
uptick in sales, not to
mention the 200 percent
increase in big ticket
sold prices, means all the
trickle-down businesses
will flourish. And it all
contributes to the stellar
quality of life we have
here on the coast.
Also in this issue is a
story you may be familiar with. It’s one that we’ve had in the works for months, but its timing could not be better. I am speaking
of the story of Pat and Fred Nasseri and their family. They are refuges from the overthrow of the 2,500-year-old Persian monarchy
begun in 600 B.C. by kings Cyrus the Great, Darius the Great and Xerxes the Great, once rulers of most of the known world. It
is heady stuff. And who can’t remember the 444 days of the American Embassy staff being held hostage by Iranian revolutionar-ies
that ousted the Shah and government and established the Islamic state? The Nasseri’s tale is a love story, but also the death of a
way of life in a once great and civilized county. Talking with Fred, I am amazed that he expresses no bitterness, just gratitude for
the freedoms his family enjoys here in America.
It’s February, which means something red for Valentine’s Day. We do up cherries in a big way, with recipes from some of the
greatest ladies in town, three of them from the Harbor Island Garden Club, which has a new cookbook out.
The lady cardinal on a cold winter day on our cover sets the tone for an all-out incredible issue. The art will refresh you. The
woodturning will astonish you. Fencing will energize you. Embezzlement will sober you. All that and more is waiting in this extra
big issue. As always it is packed for you with love.

upfront
As always, the weeks leading up to
the February issue are my toughest by far.
