up front
If you are reading this, then there are
just two months left in the year.
Those two months can be
action packed, because flotilla
and Thanksgiving are such
a big part of family life here
during November.
This month we took a different
approach to the traditional Thanksgiving
stories bringing readers a charming story
about a plantation across the Cape Fear
River where time seems to stand still. We
spent a glorious afternoon there unwill-ing
to leave until hours after scheduled
as the guests of Bobby Harrelson, his
wife Estelle and the amazing Ricky Kelly.
We were delighted by a family-style fried
chicken lunch fit for royalty, conversa-tion
on the porch, time on the property
with the dogs, including Dixie who stole
my heart and ended up on the cover. We
even were treated to a live quail sighting.
Coupled with the story of this historic
plantation where quail are hunted by
gentlemen and families gather for irre-placeable
moments, two companion sto-ries
bookend the experience: the nearby
Moores Creek National Battlefield and
a duck into Eagle Island Market, where
everything from fresh fish to hand made
soaps can be found.
Time spent on Summer Rest Road
relives an era when life was so much sim-pler
here on the water’s edge. Evocatively
written by Taylor Smith Riley, she weaves
the story of four generations of her family
members who planted roots in this turf.
Riley’s memoir is mirrored in the story of
nationally known artist, Rena MacQueen,
who grew up on Summer’s Rest. We
hope you enjoy learning how that lifestyle
colored her art.
You’ll not want to miss Andy Wood’s
treatise on the saltwater intrusion into
our freshwater river and its tributaries.
As we follow the geologic history of this
naturally occurring, albeit manmade
enhanced, phenomenon, Wood intro-duces
us to what we call the Ghost Trees,
a forest of dead baldcypress that fringe
the nearby creeks and waterways, expertly
photographed by Allison Potter.
And as you plan your holiday meals
here at year’s end, we invite you to give
thanks with Dr. Tom and Cindy Simpson
who welcome UNCW’s international
student community into their home for
an all-American feast. For the more
cultured palate, we offer a seasonal menu
shift with local chefs featuring wild game,
including, you guessed it, quail.
For those of us in magazine world,
Christmas is only three weeks away; so I
am off to dig out my favorite decorations.
I want to get a jump on the Harbor
Island Garden Club’s holiday lighting
competition. In the meantime, happy
November everyone; have a blessed
Thanksgiving and keep those less fortu-nate
in mind. There, but by the grace of
God, go you or I.
