Literacy Council
Casablanca Gala
More than 360 guests and
100 volunteers channeled their
inner Bogart and Bergman at
the Cape Fear Literacy Council’s
Casablanca Gala on Saturday,
March 3, at the Air Wilmington
Hangar. Renowned musician and
native Wilmingtonian, Grenoldo
Frazier, began the evening with
a piano performance that transported
the crowd back in time.
The remainder of the evening
featured a Moroccan buffet from
Middle of the Island Catering,
silent and live auctions, casinostyle
games and more music
from the band Blivet. This year’s
gala was the biggest one yet, and
the council is still tallying the
funds raised.
Cucalorus Oscar
Night
On Sunday, February 26, supporters
of the Cucalorus Film
Festival got their chance to walk
down the red carpet at the third
annual Cucalorus Oscar Night. The
sole fundraiser of the year for the
popular Cucalorus Film Festival,
Oscar Night provided a chance to
celebrate achievements in film at
the international level with three
large projection screens showing
the 84th Academy Awards. The
Brooklyn Arts Center attracted
more than 200 patrons gathering
to sample the hors d’ oeuvres
provided by Angie’s of Chris’
Restaurant Catering and participate
in the silent auction and Oscar
pool. Cucalorus raised more than
$20,000 at its Oscar night to help
fund the general operating costs
of the 18th Annual Cucalorus
Film Festival that will be held in
November this year.
