One of the many fun parts of
being an adult is seeing
A nd one of the cool parts
about sticking around a
small town long enough is to
know families through several
generations.
Such is the story of our cover model
this month, Logan Curry, son of our
photographer Joshua Curry and his wife
Carla. We’ve known Logan all of his life.
He is the grandson of legendary surfer
and tri-athlete Bill Curry and wife
Georgia and it should be no surprise
to anyone that like father and
grandfather, this adorable child
already surfs.
It’s the perfect segue into a story
about three other sons of the community
who make a dream pilgrimage
every winter to the fabled
North Shore of Oahu to surf
waves that simply defy the imagination.
Called the world’s best
surf breaks, illustrated with onlocation
photos by Jim Mincher,
The Seven-Mile Miracle by Tyler
Roberts, puts the reader right in
the middle of the action with Jon
Mincher, Rob Brown and Mark
Yonkers.
Not to be missed is a history
of the Harriss Northrop family
and the cottage that graced
the 300 block of South Lumina
Avenue until it was destroyed by
Hurricane Hazel in 1954. Susan Taylor
Block’s accurate accounting of the Harriss
Northrop Cottage’s history is interwoven
with the history of one of the region’s
most prominent families. Theirs is a snapshot
of an era many consider Wrightsville’s
Golden Age.
From the Golden Age to modern
times, we feature two lovely neighboring
homes on Fairway Drive adjoining
Cape Fear Country Club this month.
Architect Ginny Woodruff, known for
her restrained, yet elegant, exteriors and
her contemporary interior floorplans,
has executed two custom designs for the
Hamilton and Mertz families. Working
WBM march 2012
with interior designer Kathy McKenzie
and long-time collaborators Jim Farlow
of the Farlow Group and David Erwin of
North State Gardens, both homes blend
effortlessly into the built environment and
the surrounding landscape.
The landscape takes center stage in this
month’s tribute to the arts. We bring you
three adventurous photographers — Harry
Taylor, Billy Cone and Steve Brimm
— who lose themselves in the process of
capturing life as art through photography.
We’re always suckers for great photographs,
including great food shots like
Allison Potter’s featured in this month’s
Savor. You won’t want to miss Cole
Dittmer’s visit with Maria Accettato and
the homemade pasta she showed him how
to make. She also shares her family’s secret
sauce recipe.
After a mild winter, spring is around the
corner, time to get out and enjoy all that
this area has to offer!
