up front
The days are glorious and ripe for outdoor activity.
It’s time to get out and enjoy it — all
too soon the seasons will cycle out once more.
T
his year, as never before, we
as a staff are out experiencing
what this area has to offer
as part of our ongoing fitness challenge.
And so it was in mid-July that four of us
(plus trainer LaMaine Williams) ventured
the easy two hour drive to Carver’s Falls,
Fayetteville, to experience the exhilaration
of ziplining.
Norwood Bryan’s family has built
the course out of an undeveloped parcel
of land that once belonged to Frank
Stout’s father, prior to the Bryan’s
mid-century purchase. It’s a fantastic,
evergreen way to share the 55 forested
acres, with minimal disruption of the
landscape located on the edge of a
bustling city.
It was first class, fun, exciting and at
times terrifying, our afternoon on three
swing bridges and eight ziplines high above
the trees. (What made it most remarkable
for me is a tremendous fear of heights.)
What the photos don’t show is the high
speeds you attain as you zip along. For
a person who loves the wind in her hair
— more speed please — that was the best
part. We’ll have the story of our trip and
Allison Breiner Potter’s exquisite photography
for you in September, but wanted to
tease you a little ahead of the game.
In the meantime, we have an exciting
issue for you this month.
As a spinoff to the fitness challenge, we
wanted more knowledge about how to
run and what shoes to wear. We sought
advice from running coach and marathoner
Tom Clifford, as well as Mark
Kauffman, an experienced runner, trainer
and sports footwear sales associate. Add to
that, distance runner (100 k = 64 miles)
Ed George; serial marathoners Charlotte
Corriher and her running partner, our
own Tara McKittrick; and Christa
Iammarino, a qualifier for the 2012 U.S.
Olympic Marathon Team Trials whom
Clifford trains, and you get the picture.
It too, is brilliantly illustrated by Allison

Breiner Potter’s photography. You don’t
want to miss the too cute lobster outfits,
either.
We have great stories about Jean
Beasley and her Topsail Island sea turtle

them. There are levels of riders from slap
happy to serious, and the group has a
