Three teams line up in front of the Blockade Runner
Beach Resort on May 15 to start the Wrightsville
Beach to Atlantic Beach, North Carolina, leg of the
Worrell 1000 Reunion Race. The treacherous, offshore
1,000-mile catamaran race up the East Coast returned
this year after a long hiatus. Each leg is a sprint and
includes an overnight stop; the team with the lowest
total time wins this year it was 71 hrs 32 minutes 55
seconds (two one-hour penalties were added to this).
The extreme, two-person team sailing race on 20-foot
beach-type catamarans started in Hollywood, Florida,
on May 6 and ended in Virginia Beach, Virginia, on
May 18 with Team Australia taking first place.
