ALLISON POTTER
13
From the stunning cover to the very last page,
this issue testifies: summer is upon us.
THE sportfishing yacht Jaruco, the
90-foot North Carolina build-and
design Jarrett Bay, is likely fishing
Costa Rica, Panama or perhaps Peru.
She could turn up in the Mediterranean or off
Africa, but you can see her here and read her story
in our pages, starting on page 28. The Worrell 1000
reunion race seen on the cover and on pages 60 and
61 is behind us, as is the annual Carolina Cup also
seen starting on page 58.
If it is June, plein air painter Mike Rooney is
back out on 1-95, moving from place to place
painting quintessential scenes that celebrate a
kinder, gentler life. Since this month officially
begins hurricane season and that last one was
a doozy, we have a primer on the subject by
UNCW’s own Roger Shew. Tear out the
Be Prepared! list to keep handy just in case a
storm blows up out on the horizon this year,
we can all use the reminder. I for one, planned
poorly what to take when evacuating last
September, never dreaming how long we
would be kept away.
Our home feature is a retreat on Bald Head
Island where many locals are known to take mini
vacations. Not that I don’t love home, but these
photos have renewed a desire to spend a few
days away from the hustle and bustle of greater
Wilmington. I would so enjoy not driving a
car for a week, and who wouldn’t love zoom-ing
along under a canopy of live oaks in a golf
upfront
cart to pick up groceries or go out to eat? Sign
me up! To honor all fathers, a look at Father
and Sons; Chris, Josh and Billy Curry. We’ve
got plenty of other killer stories and photos to
entertain and inform you.
Don’t miss the exceptional one of the third crane arriving at the Port of Wilmington, the reopening of the Dr. Hubert
Eaton Sr. tennis court, or eating cake for breakfast, a personal favorite of mine. My family will tell you — when there are
Nothing Bundt Cake Bundtinis in the house, I too, will eat cake for breakfast.
Enjoy this issue!
