Begging to be read, this issue is rich
with exciting stories and photography.
E ASKED members of the Cape Fear Camera Club for some of their favorite photos, and we were blown away
by the excellence and variety of what they sent. Because it is June, we narrowed the field down by using beach-related
scenes. Be sure to read each photographer’s comments; they enhance the experience exponentially.
Speaking of stunning images, check out director of photography Allison Potter’s stunning shots of high-flying
BMX freestyle champion and new local guy Ryan Nyquist. When he is not helping his wife in her just-opened
Pat Bradford photographed at the helm aboard Wrightsville Beach’s Trial Size, a 61-foot Garlington,
built in Stuart, Florida, owned by Phillip David, and captained by David’s son, Jackson.

The 16-time X Games medalist and
father of three is also an Olympic
hopeful.
Getting onto the water, we take
a look at the fat-pursed Big Rock
Tournament coming up the second
weekend in June in Morehead
City, where a lot of locals will be
teamed up aboard sport fishing
boats vying for the half-million in
prize money for landing the big
one. It is a safe bet Wrightsville’s
Trial Size and the David family
will be competing. They were
very gracious to allow me on
their boat for this month’s
incredible photo.
Back at home that week,
standup paddleboarders should
have a quieter time out on the
water. Learn about this highly
popular sport that has taken
the waterways by storm. Don’t
miss photographer Renee Sauer’s
incredible morning shot of a lone
paddleboarder in our In View.
Turns out even paddleboard-ers
need to know boating safety
rules, and if you didn’t know, May 19-25 was proclaimed Safe Boating Week in Wrightsville Beach by the town fathers. Our informative
piece by Mary Margaret McEachern is a great read even for the saltiest of old salts.
This month’s Savor spotlights the local fig, and in a small way pays tribute to my next-door neighbor of 20 years Bebe Saffo, who left us
behind earlier this year. Her fig trees, now tended by children and grandchildren, are a legacy to her audacious gardening skills.
Buckle up, summer’s underway!
