Strength & Perseverance
40
Wild mustangs have roamed North
Carolina’s Shackleford Banks since at
least the 1600s. They have survived
on the narrow barrier island for cen-turies,
enduring countless storms.
The horses symbolize strength and
perseverance — an apt metaphor
for the people of our coastal region.
Like the horses, the people who
inhabit this area have endured
numerous storms. Our strength and
perseverance once again will see us
through as we recover in the after-math
of Hurricane Florence.

18 Equal Justice
One of three women on the state’s seven-person
North Carolina Supreme Court, Justice Barbara
Jackson, who with her husband has a vacation home
in Kure Beach, can be credited with evening the scales

24 Wrightsville’s First Family of
Opera
Dr. Michael Rallis hoped his daughter, Nikoleta,
would follow him into the medical field. Instead, she
followed him into another of his passions, singing
opera. Michael and his now New York-based daughter
wow audiences — and each other — with their arias.

40 Strength and Perseverance
In an increasingly penned-in, tamed world, the places
inhabited by wild horses are the places people don’t
live — scraps of landscape, yellow deserts, and barrier
islands periodically ravaged by hurricanes. Places like
Shackleford Banks. By Colleen Thompson
50 The Wrath of Florence
The downgraded storm made landfall at Wrightsville
Beach on Sept. 14, not the Category 4 or 5 storm
expected, but extremely powerful. Fierce winds
tore at roofs, downed trees and power lines, and
relentless rains caused river, creek and sound flood-ing
64 The Magic of Personal
Connection
Debra Bucci’s passion for life and investment
in the happiness of others is evident in her work.
Her vibrant paintings combine realism and
whimsy, often depicting elements of the natural
world and wildlife settings. By Kathryn Manis
72 Conservation by Design
Former conservation biologist Susy Paisley’s
fabrics and wallpapers are inspired by a desire
to help endangered species. Her Carolina Tree of
Life collection features extinct or threatened flora
and fauna including the Carolina parakeet, the
Venus flytrap, and the migratory monarch
butterfly. By Simon Gonzalez
78 Rooms with a View
After an exhaustive search for the perfect location
on the water, this couple found a lot overlooking
the Intracoastal Waterway. They took advantage
of the site by building a contemporary home
featuring plenty of windows, putting the focus
on the outside. By Simon Gonzalez
100 The Cheesemakers
With a growing number of small farmhouse
operations, North Carolina is occupying an ever-increasing

across the region. While Wrightsville Beach was
spared major damage, the rest of the tri- county area
and greater coastal region was devastated. Flooding
became widespread and deadly. See Florence in
