20 Holy Architecture
The view of Wilmington, North Carolina, seen from the crest
of the Cape Fear River Bridge reveals the city’s tree-lined
streets and its lofty landmark church steeples. These soaring
towers and the churches they dignify are grounded in
architectural symbolism, steeped in history and celebrated
in worship. By Amanda Greene
28 Restoring the Temple
North Carolina’s oldest synagogue, completed in 1876, is
Wilmington’s Temple of Israel. The Moorish Revival structure
is the only one of its kind citywide. An extensive restoration
completed in 2012 preserved this architectural treasure and
renewed the luster to its exquisite stained-glass windows.

38 Old Wilmington Christmas
Mountain greenery, velveteen ribbons and twinkling stars
embellish Old Wilmington’s historic facades. A cup of hot
cocoa and a fresh baked cookie will set the holiday mood for a
stroll down South Front Street. By Marimar McNaughton
46 White Christmas
An 86-year old cottage, restored and renovated 17 years ago,
has become the year-round family home of Arland and Chip
Whitesides. Borrowing Arland’s light, bright aesthetic and the
family’s love of sailing, Chelsea Fritts of Fiore Fine Flowers
styled the historic home for Christmas.

60 The Diary of John Barry
John Barry III, of Oak Island, made it to his 70th birthday
without knowing much about his father’s family history.
Those chapters were reclaimed during a recent family
reunion. The missing chapters have been pieced together
with hundreds of vintage photographs accompanied by
his grandfather’s hand-written journal.

71 Homemade for the Holidays
Sara Butcher’s Hoggard High School Cooking 1 students
have reinvented the old fashioned bake sale. Assembling
ingredients for three holiday sweets, they packaged their
gifts in Ball jars decorated with colorful Christmas cotton.

FEATURES
Just like at Christmas,
good things come in small
packages. Sometimes on
photo shoots with a lot
of production and great
stylists, it’s the little details
that make the impact.
Well-known photographer
Jeff Dunas told me he
refers to these images as
gifts, the little vignettes
that surface during
shoots or just the right
expression from a tough
subject. Happy Holidays.
