up front
long the way we have made so
many friends. So often read-ers
tells us we have become
a part of the fabric of the
community and they can hardly remem-ber
a time when a copy of Wrightsville
Beach Magazine didn’t grace the top of
their coffee tables.
White Christmas, the historic
Van Leuven-Whitesides Cottage,
trimmed in the hottest holiday colors
is our first gift to readers just decorating
their own living spaces. For lovers
of the traditional green and red
Christmas décor, we traveled door
to door along Old Wilmington’s
Front Street to capture the time-honored
traditions.
Within walking distance from
one another, Wilmington’s holy
architecture inspired a closer look
at the city’s earliest churches, now
historic landmarks. Amanda Greene
is your guide.
Wilmington’s Temple of Israel,
a Moorish Revival structure, is the
only one of its kind citywide and
it sits downtown nestled among
other iconic choices found in Holy
Architecture.
Sara Butcher’s Hoggard High School
Cooking class graciously agreed to
help us create seasonal hostess gifts in
Homemade for the Holidays. We’ve
supplied the recipes, baking directions
and holiday gift tags.
You’ll also find the story of the
reunited Barry family. It is a poignant
tale centered around a joyous Christmas
birth and, later, a family torn apart by
tragedy, untimely death and the Great
Depression. We are deeply grateful
to John Barry III for allowing us to
reproduce parts of this treasured family
memoir. Just before we went to press,
we received this note from his cousin,
Regina Barry Rosa.

“Before my Mother’s death in May,
my sister and I found the journal and
pictures stored away in her cedar chest.
She had never shown them to us! We took
the album to the nursing home. At 94 she
was able to remember names and details
of every picture in the album. I wish I had
taken notes, who would have known that
it would be the last time I was able to have
a conversation with her.

My mother’s gift to me upon her death
was John Barry. I never knew him grow-ing
up. I had only met him once when I
was very young. The morning of my moth-er’s
funeral I turned around to see him in
the back of the church and we have been
the best of friends since that day. I know
my Mother and Uncle are smiling.”
I guarantee you we are smiling too.
Merry Christmas, this is our gift to all
of you!
