We are often asked
by those who know what we are working on
in advance of the issue what we think of a story.
t’s not often that we stun ourselves,
but I can safely say with
this issue we have done just that.
Of course, we all want optimum
health in 2013, so we kick off the
year with a primer on juicing.
I have come to know that I can’t possibly
eat enough vegetables, and besides,
even when I eat them, they
are not the healthiest servings.
My favorites are often topped
with butter and salt, so juicing
carrots has been a good
choice for me. In addition to
the increased energy I need, it
helps keep me well.
When we began the feature
I had a strong dislike for the
venerable beet, but have now
added it to my weekday juice,
which typically includes
carrots, apple, ginger, a handful
of red seedless grapes. Who
knew beets were delicious in
a juice combo, and the bright
red color makes the drink fun.
To this recipe, I often add
a scrap of onion, or garlic, and when
I have it, even cilantro is a favorite taste.
And wheatgrass with its 90 minerals?
Count me in for an ounce of this as
often as I can.
This issue features outstanding
reading, from the cover story of
the ringing rake to the story of the
Confederate blockade-runner captured
by Union forces and converted to a
blockading ship. These steam vessels
often ran down the shore just outside the
breaker line to avoid being detected. Now
as a Union gunboat, the ship accidently
ran aground at Masonboro Inlet in 1863.
The 168-foot iron-clad hull and her cannons
lie under the sands of Masonboro
Inlet to this day. The artifacts, which
washed up on Masonboro in 2010, were
confirmation to historians that what lies
beneath the sand is the Columbia.
We all fell in love with Patti Howell’s
new home at Autumn Hall. The design,
architecture and appointments are simply
outstanding and the perfect home for us
to kick off your New Year reading.
Packed with awe-inspiring photography,
social seens and other wonderful stories
that will capture your interest, we also
offer up wishes for a healthy and blessed
New Year.

a veggie she previously would not touch.
Now it is in her morning juice.
