Paw Jam


Battleship Park


In its 8th year P.A.W.S. (Pets Are Worth Saving) of North Carolina will once again host Paw Jam an all-day event featuring live entertainment pet-related vendors and contests arts crafts and plenty of food and beverages. Several thousand people are expected to attend this always-popular event. Last year more than $15 000 was raised to support local nonprofit animal rescue groups. Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame Induction Events

The GWSHOF will host a black-tie optional banquet honoring its 2009 inductees Chester McGlockton George Rountree III Brian M. Rowson Helen Grey Smith and E. A. “Spike” Corbin all of whom were selected from a list of athletes coaches administrators trainers doctors members of the media and other individuals who made a significant impact on the caliber of athletics in the Greater Wilmington area. On Sunday May 3 the reception/auction will be held at 5 p.m. and will be followed by the induction ceremony at 6:30 p.m. This years induction ceremony host will be Woody L. Durham the voice of the Tarheels. JDRF Hope Gala

The 6th annual Hope Gala for the Wilmington office of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is a black-tie event that supports research for finding a cure for diabetes and its complications. Since the first Gala in 2004 the Wilmington community has raised $1.75 million for this important cause. The organization is now funding $7.7 million worth of projects at North Carolina universities: UNC Chapel Hill North Carolina State Wake Forest and Duke and also locally at PPD. The evening will feature a cocktail reception and dinner party live and silent auctions and the presentation of the “Living and Giving” Award to Jack and Mary Barto. Mr. Barto is the CEO of New Hanover Regional Medical Center and the couple is being honored for their extraordinary commitment to our community. YWCA Women of Achievement Awards Dinner

The YWCA Women of Achievement Awards is the signature event recognizing and celebrating womens and teens exemplary accomplishments in southeastern North Carolina. Honorees will be recognized for notable achievements in their fields exemplary service to their communities and schools and willingness to take leadership positions on issues that have an impact on the Cape Fear area. Since 1985 this event has honored 199 women and awarded college scholarships to 54 teen leaders in Brunswick Columbus New Hanover and Pender counties. CFCC Gift of Education Luncheon

Cape Fear Community College (CFCC) will host its 5th annual “Changing Lives Through the Gift of Education” luncheon to raise money for student scholarships. This years luncheon themed “Empowering Students Providing Hope in our Community ” will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Last year more than 450 donors raised a record-breaking $275 000. These funds helped to provide more than 200 student scholarships and pushed the 2008 fundraising total to more than $1.3 million. This year guests can look forward to student presentations and a keynote address from NC Community College System President Dr. R. Scott Ralls. Clubs for Kids Annual Golf Tournament

The annual Clubs for Kids Tournament including a workshop for children in the morning and an adult shotgun-start tournament at 1 p.m. raises money for children and families that the Child Advocacy and Parenting Place Exchange Club Center (CAPP) serves in an effort to prevent child abuse and neglect. CAPP offers educational outreach and community support for parents and those who care for children. This years Red Cross Gala will mark the 101st anniversary of the Cape Fear Chapter of the Red Cross. The 9th Annual Battleship Hootenanny a concert featuring local folk and pop favorites including John Golden and Friends will take place on the ships fantail beneath the stars. An Epicurean Evening to Benefit the Methodist Home for Children

For the third year in a row this grand black-tie gala will feature food tastings from local chefs and restaurants as well as live and silent auction packages. Awards will be given to participants for best food in different categories. Proceeds from the event will help fund programs for Wilmington children and families in need. A fun-filled tradition Cape Fear Literacy Councils (CFLCs) Spelling Bee for Literacy pits three-person spelling teams of adults against each other to win the coveted Bee Trophy to showcase at their office or place of business for a year. Sponsors and team members include area businesses professionals and civic groups throughout the Cape Fear region. Local celebrity emcees encourage good-natured competition and keep the laughs coming. Since its inception in 1998 the Pink Ribbon Project has raised more than $1 000 000 to help bring comfort and support to women undergoing treatment for cancer by funding projects such as the Pink Ribbon comfort bags and mammograms for uninsured women through the Coastal Care Van.
