South Topsail fishermen on the beach cannot see this school of drum out on the sandbar. The drum (these are immature or puppy drum) emerge from the inland creeks in the early spring, into the salt marshes where they stay most of the summer. They congregate in the surf in the fall when the temperatures start falling and the finger mullets run for the sea.

John Scull and Sam Proffitt salute after placing a wreath at the memorial marker for Lt. Robert Wynn in Wrightsville Beach on December 6, 2021 at Wynn Plaza. The Wrightsville Beach Fire Department held a small ceremony to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Wynn’s death in the line of duty at the Doak fire on the same date in 1981.
