A
T a reunion fundraiser on Nov. 9, 2019,
the Friends of Wrightsville
Beach dedicated the day to
2016 Waterman Hall of Fame
(HOF) inductee Kevin Walker for prolific
giving back to the community over the
years. Walker, inducted as a local hero and
the Hall’s first member from the diving com-munity,
has contributed to schools, nonprofits,
and organizations that promote the longevity
of Wrightsville Beach.
In Walker’s honor, a diving helmet, also
known as a hard hat, worn by U.S. Navy
divers and those in commercial diving and
marine salvage was donated to the museum
and its HOF room by Walker’s business part-ner,
Mike McCarley.
In its second year, Friends of Wrightsville
Beach is strictly a fundraising group com-prised
of between 200-300 members, with
a six-person board with a focus on raising
money for the Wrightsville Beach Museum.
The Hall of Fame was created in 2014 as
a tribute to the achievements of the gener-ations
of Wrightsville Beach watermen and
women who have shaped the community
and its relationship with the water.
Individuals can be honored in at least six
classifications: local hero, diving, beach cul-ture,
surfing, fishing and sailing.
The awards are selected by the HOF board,
which is composed of members of the
ALLISON POTTER
