HIS healthy
first issue of
a new year
includes a
brand new
monthly feature entitled
Favorite Thing. This excit-ing
inaugural feature comes
complete with a dynamic
cover image of standup
paddleboard champion
April Zilg.
We anchor the issue
with the 15th installment
of our Let’s Talk series.
Unmasking Suicide
tackles a challenging,
often socially unaccept-able
subject, but one quite
close to my heart. We are
trusting this frank discus-sion
will open eyes, while
opening dialogue for many
who have suffered with
depression, been affected by suicide, or know family and loved ones who have. That’s the first step back to wholeness and prevention
— talk about it.
On to one of my favorite new interests, essential oils, which are distilled from healing plants. Whether cleaning skin or
refrigerators, there is so much to learn about each oil. From tea tree to frankincense, I am putting many to the test and must
say, I have not been disappointed — except for unintentionally stripping the finish off a cast iron skillet. My quest began when
I bought a bottle thinking of my 21-year-old granddaughter, after overhearing a friend at Jennifer Vanderfleet’s farmers’ market
booth say she used tea tree oil for adult acne. My experimentation so far has found oils doing a myriad of beneficial things,
from killing fleas and tiny home invading ants, to rapidly healing wounds and insect stings, to cleaning ring around the collar
and makeup brushes. I think of oils as God’s little miracle in a bottle.
You’re gonna want to check out the Southern Ultra Tour, and in The Best Laid Plans, one of the most magnificent homes of
distinction ever, Monika and Rich Williams’ European-style house on the water at Landfall.
There’s also a primer on decluttering — who doesn’t need that? — and an in-depth look at the restaurants and dishes that
took the Taste of Wrightsville Beach awards last October.
We bundled it all with love for you. Happy 2018!
