CHANGING OUR WORLD TOGETHER ONE FASCINATING STORY AT A TIME.
18 Painting with Glass
Enameling metal involves painting with powdered
glass and firing the piece at a temperature of
1,500 degrees — a delicate and risky process.
These Wilmington-area artists are devoted to the
craft, creating distinctly colorful and wearable
enameled artwork. By Johanna Ferebee
30 Life After Death
Oakdale Cemetery, the “treasure of Wilmington”
hidden at the end of 15th Street, is much more than
a burial ground. It’s a three-dimensional history book,
a sculpture garden, a wildlife and nature preserve,
and quite possibly the most serene spot in the city.
Now a $1.9 million capital fundraising campaign
seeks to preserve this cherished historic place.

38 A Fleet for Liberty
Between 1941 and 1946, tens of thousands of
Wilmington residents were employed by the North
Carolina Shipbuilding
Company, building Liberty
ships to carry critical supplies across the Atlantic.
Laboring 24 hours a day, and completing ships in
32 days from start to finish, Wilmington’s shipyard
workers have a significant place in World War II
history. By Simon Gonzalez
46 Re-berth Along the Cape Fear
Goods have flowed in and out on the Cape Fear from
the time Wilmington’s first settlement was established
on the river’s banks in the early 18th century, earning
the town its nickname of the Port City. A current
$150 million infrastructure plan is working to keep
the port up-to-date and thriving, bringing in bigger
ships and continuing to enhance the state’s economy.

54 The Bridges of New Hanover
County
Getting from Point A to Point B in the Cape Fear
region often means crossing a body of water, and
that means traversing one of our many bridges,
including Wrightsville’s endearing Heide Trask draw-bridge.

64 Little Vignettes of Clarity
Fritzi Huber, a fiber artist whose practice since the late
1970s has hinged on her fascination with textiles and
a penchant for papermaking, has a style and artistic
practice that she describes as circularly evolving
rather than linear. Her works express the nuances of
time, enticing viewers to explore their own memories
and personal connections. By Kathryn Manis
70 West Meets East
After years of nomadic living, the Bell family is setting
down roots in their new Landfall home. By combin-ing
a California design vibe with Coastal Carolina
warmth, the midcentury modern-inspired home
ranks high in comfort and style. By Simon Gonzalez
88 The Pull of the Pepper
The pepper, in its many colors, shapes, tastes and
varieties, is a staple of cuisines around the globe.
From the trendy shishito to the modest bell pepper
to the fiery jalapeño, the pepper is a versatile and
accessible culinary hero. By Emory Rakestraw
