It is with great pleasure we present
to you this latest edition of
Wrightsville Beach Magazine, the
153rd consecutive monthly issue.
While other publications may spring
up periodically, like green grass in the
hot sun, they tend not to pass the test
of time, of endurance. Not so with this
great community magazine and the tremendously
talented staff members who
gather stories of interest and worth for
your reading enjoyment each month.
As children return to school and the
outdoor temperatures lower, we turn
your attention to the agonizing issue of
homelessness in New Hanover County,
with a look at the Path to Housing initiated
by Good Shepherd Center, not just
a shelter or soup kitchen but a path out
of a sobering situation. Next, the issue of
Homelessness in New Hanover Schools
and how that is handled, plus a report
card on the Cape Fear’s 10-Year Plan to
End Chronic Homelessness, an exhaustive
drain on available resources.
We balance that seriousness with a look
at the Language of Horses, a lifestyle more
prevalent on this coast than you may
imagine. From the charming young lady,
who grew up on the beach at Sweetwater
Surf Shop and her horse Sweetie on our
cover, to the Arabian breeding barn in
Middle Sound, to the discipline of
dressage, we wrap it all in our look at
what to wear around the barn, show
ring and on the road in competition.
Our ever-popular monthly look at fine
area homes continues with two offerings:
First an Edgewater backyard addition
that will have you wanting one of your
own, and secondly, a redo of a classic
beach box on Pelican Drive, made over
for a multigenerational family.
Not to be missed, our road trip in the

quest to find the perfect BBQ sandwich
(and we did) lands us new friends and
a great escape for a meal at a quieter
pace at Lanes Ferry Dock & Grill on
the banks of the Northeast Cape Fear
River near Rocky Point. And if you happen
to be a hotdog fan, I can personally
also recommend the bacon-wrapped
dog. Nestled on a slice of melted cheese,

of checkers on the Lanes Ferry porch.
resting on a split roll, it is ladled with
chili, garnished with cole slaw, onions
and topped with pickles, jalapeños and
crumbled bacon for an off-the-chart
mouth-watering sensation.
As we welcome fall and all that it has
to offer, give a thought to how you can
make a difference out there.

Summer’s end, children back in school,
cooler temps and a less-frantic pace
all herald the start of September.
