BY M.K. Barnes
Luly’s Cuban Cafe (1113 Military Cutoff Road in the Forum) offers traditional Cuban food at an affordable price. In his signature dish Ropa vieja which translates roughly as “old clothes ” Chef and owner Lee Grossman (who also owns nearby Bento Box) uses classic Cuban cooking methods to shake up your common conception of comfort food. Skirt steak is prepared in a pressure cooker and then simmered in a rich Cuban tomato sauce causing it to become tender and full of flavor. To finish the dish off the steak is served with white rice black beans and sweet pan-fried plantains. “This dish is shredded and stewed comfort food at its best ” says Chef Lee. With nothing on the menu more than $10 Luly’s – named for Grossman’s wife – promises to send you home happy for a lot less money than you thought.
