ITTLE DID WE IMAGINE when we set out to take a photo worthy of a July cover that we would capture a moment in
time that was priceless. See more of our South Harbor Island kids in the In View on page 52.
In Salt Life, we learn about South Harbor Island native Hank Carter and his wife, Britt, who are celebrating the
birth of their first child. Hank’s fascinating job is chief mate on a big rig that transports petroleum products, everything
from asphalt to jet fuel. Britt’s career is making sure there’s enough clean water to go around.
To honor our nation’s birthday we have the story
of the Society of the Cincinnati, whose members
are all direct descendants of officers who fought for
America’s freedom. The Society was founded after
our Revolutionary War. The founding members
included George Washington, the very first United
States president. Current members include some
of our very own friends and neighbors.
Fifteen years after the filming of the teen drama
Dawson’s Creek wrapped, the waterfront house
and dock that viewers know as Dawson’s house
is pretty much unchanged. The family whose
home it was — and is — has fond memories of
the filming and the cast, while fans frequently
drop in to remind them of the glory days when
Wilmington was known as “Hollywood East.”
Who doesn’t love a good treasure story? This
one is going down right off our shore, as Blue
Water Ventures and Endurance Exploration
Group salvage the wreck of the fabled passenger
steamer Pulaski, which lies just 40-something
miles off the coast. Crew on the Blue Water Rose
welcomed us aboard, and gave us a firsthand look at just-recovered treasure, including
silver and gold and personal items from the passengers. The two companies, both publicly traded, have their hopes set on the recovery
of much more. It is an incredible ongoing adventure.
This month’s Home of Distinction is a striking waterfront remodel opposite Greenville Sound and Shinn Creek, with Masonboro
Island in the views. You do not want to miss the interior blend of coastal and modern themes, with a dash or two of Southwestern and
Asian influence.
And we leave you with one of my personal favorite summer treats, ice cream. It’s great reading, full of fun facts that I bet you didn’t
already know, like when the first banana split was created or the waffle cone invented, and what is the difference between vanilla and
French vanilla?
Happy summer and may God bless America!
